FAQ

  • What if I have never done yoga before?

There is no need to worry about doing yoga prior to trying a Bikram class. Bikram Yoga is a beginning level class with plenty of detailed information to lead people of all ages and levels of ability safely through the class.

  • Why is the room heated?

The room is heated to help prevent injury and allow your body to stretch safely. The heat provides a level of detoxification through sweating. Bikram says it’s like a blacksmith who heats up his metal, you heat the body up to mould and change it.

  • What should I wear?

Shorts are ideal or fitted three quarter pants, sport bras, tank tops, etc. The lighter the clothing the better as the skin needs to breath and through perspiration the body stays cool. It is also very important to be able to see your ankles and knees in the mirror so shorts are ideal. Men can wear vests and running or cycling shorts. Remember you are going to sweat a lot, the less clothing the better. We do stock Shakti Shanti Yoga Clothing at the studio.

  • Will there be enough room for me in class or do I need to book for class?

As a First Timer you do not need to book for class however you need to be at the studio 20 minutes prior the class. The studio works on a first come first serve basis kindly ensure that you arrive early enough to secure your spot in the yoga room. We will ensure there is enough room for everyone. Once you are a member we encourage you to book for class on-line.

  • How will I advance in my practice if the poses are always the same?

There will always be deeper places to experience through yoga asanas. Not only will you start opening up your body in ways             you never thought possible, you will realize giving 100 percent and achieving stillness in every pose is a lifelong journey.                  Finding the focus, discipline and one point of concentration through the duration of the class are other ways to advance your          practice. After several classes you will begin to experience the magic of Bikram’s yoga. Each class is like trying it for the first            time all over again as you will experience something new in every class.

  • How many times a week should I practice?

As a beginner, Bikram recommends practicing 6 days a week for 60 days to change your body and experience the benefits of his series. After the 60 days he recommends going into maintenance, which is different for each person. Some people will benefit from 2-3 days a week, while others feel better at 5 days a week. However, if 60 days is not conducive to your schedule, 3 days a week is a nice starting point. The more you are able to come, the more benefits you will receive. Just do yoga!

  • I am feeling dizzy, faint and nauseous in class, is this normal?

It is absolutely normal to feel a bit out of sorts as you begin to practice Bikram Yoga. All the symptoms you feel are just ways your body will communicate to you. These symptoms are signs that your body is detoxing, so you know the yoga is working for you. Most of these sensations can also be signs of dehydration, ensure you are always well hydrated before class. Drinking water throughout the day will help to energize you during your practice. Remember if you do experience a little dizziness or you feel faint, please sit down as needed. Over time, and the more you are able to practice, these symptoms will disappear.
